Waste Prevention Report

In support of Cork Co. Council's Waste Management Plan, a project was initiated by Dr. Mary Stack of Cork Co. Council's Environmental Awareness and Research Unit and Coolagown Development Group.

The project was designed as a pilot for village communities, promoting waste prevention and behavioural change in dealing with household waste and the diversion of organic waste from landfill.

The primary aims of the programme were:

  • The challange of improving household waste management behaviour.
  • To educate households on how to reduce negative environmental impacts on their environment through waste prevention, energy and water conservation trainings.
    • Twenty two households signed up to participate in the project. A series of information meetings and trainings were organised. This included the use invited specialists from Cork Co Council, An Taisce, ESB Customer Servises Liaison Officer, a BER Assessor and Mike Holden, a facilitor and trainer specialising in environmental and sustainability issues.
